Something to Remember
With only two more studio albums under her belt since the 1990 compilation The Immaculate Collection, this would seem to be premature. However, this retrospective’s eye was on her ballads and drew from her entire career.

Surprisingly, only two songs (Crazy for You and Live to Tell) overlap with The Immaculate Collection. Also from the Immaculate era: a remix of an album cut from 1984’s Like a Virgin (Love Don’t Live Here Anymore), one of Madonna’s most poignant – but lowest charting to that point – songs (1989’s Oh Father), and an album cut from 1990’s I’m Breathless (Something to Remember) that gives this collection its name.

‘90s material includes Madonna’s biggest #1 (1994’s Take a Bow), the song Rain from 1992’s Erotica, and non-album hits (This Used to Be My Playground, I’ll Remember). There are also “three new tracks, most notably a version of Marvin Gaye’s I Want You recorded with the British trip-hop group Massive Attack.” STE

“Throughout the album, Madonna proves that she’s a terrific singer whose voice has improved over the years. Not one of the tracks is second-rate, and the best songs on Something to Remember rank among the best pop music of the ‘80s and '90s.” STE
