Our Halloween season kicked off with some pumpkin decorating. Levi didn’t want to carve his pumpkin, just color it. Evan, however, got into the carving spirit. |
Mom helped out – unfortunately, we did the pumpkins too early and Jack Whitaker I didn’t make it until Halloween. Evan appropriately memorialized him with a tombstone taped over the trash can. |
No problem – we just loaded up in the bus and headed to the pumpkin patch for another one. |
Then Uncle Chris came into town for Halloween weekend and helped carve Jack Whitaker II. |
We did a little window dressing as well. We hung ghosts on threads from a string so that we could pull it and make them dance in the front window. We also got a fun Mr. Potato Head set to decorate one pumpkin.

As for costumes, at one point, Evan had potentially three costumes to wear for different events. For his school’s Halloween party and parade, he couldn’t wear a mask or bring any kind of weapon so he went with a magician costume (his Peter Pan outfit from last year was also discussed) for those events and his Darth Vader costume was reserved for trick-or-treating.
Meanwhile, Levi was pretty content with Spider Man, although the shot at right is a rare one – he didn’t want to wear the mask. |
We trick-or-treated early at Mom’s work and then again on Halloween. Dad and Uncle Chris got into the costume spirit as well. |
First up on Halloween night was a stroll to Evan’s school for hot dogs and chili. Along the way we had a couple photo ops. Uncle Chris couldn’t resist the “Evil Empire” implications of Darth Vader by a McCain-Palin sign. Then, someone left a werewolf mask on a park bench so it became a victim of Vader’s carnage. |
Once at school, there was an amusing Vader vs. Vader moment. Luckily, there was no light saber dual to determine which was the true evil lord of the Sith. |
As the evening wore on, the evil influence of Vader was becoming apparent. First up, Levi began to succumb as his Spider Man identity slowly began to transform. Then, however, was the most awful transformation possible – our first Trick-or-Treat stop was a house already decked out for Christmas. Sitting on the front porch was an evil Santa giving out candy. No one is safe. |
Well, here’s hoping everyone’s Halloween was safe – and fun! One final thought – when Trick-or-Treating next year, don’t forget, in the words of Levi, the most important thing to say – “Is there chocolate in it?”
