Topsail Beach, June 2008
Welcome to our Topsail Beach 2008 page. This was Evan and Dave’s third trip to the beach. It was Levi’s second and we’re not even counting for Becky, since she went countless times as a kid.

Below are some our favorite photos alongside some of Becky and Dave’s memories.

On Evan’s first day at the beach, he said “This is where I belong!” As Becky says, he then bugged us “all week to buy a house so we could live at the beach. I recall another little girl 35 years ago who did the same to her parents.”

On the flip side, Levi was not so sure of the beach and water. As he asked grandmommy, “why all that water?” He would go out to play in the sand and within 15 minutes (or less) say, “I ready to go in.”

On the last day though, Levi jumped waves with Dave and LOVED it. He’s primed for next time now. He liked making drip castles as well.

Becky helped Evan “surf” on the boogie board. He even rode a few waves in completely on his own (such as the first photo atop the page)! Pure joy on that kid’s face. He couldn’t get enough!
Evan also had some fun castle building time.

Evan and Levi were also overjoyed to get lots of time with Grandmommy Shirley.

Jean Ferguson and Conrad Thomas We also had a wonderful visit with friends Jean and Dave and their new 3 month old Conrad. What fun to have baby time again. He is a cutie! Dave is an incredible cook and he treated us to a phenomenal dinner!! Dave Thomas
Conrad Thomas and Levi Whitaker Levi definitely enjoyed playing with Conrad; Evan enjoyed watching the lightning storm one night with Dave. Evan Whitaker and Dave Thomas

Dave and Jean and Conrad stayed a couple days and then went home, but then cousin Michael came for a couple days. Levi got a bit confused with all the family names and titles, so he called him “Uncle Liz.”

The sand castle experts a few houses down entertained us with a different sand castle fortress almost every day. Levi and Evan especially enjoyed running around in circles in the huge moat of one of the castles as high tide came in.

We also enjoyed watching the kite surfers who amazed us as they’d hit a wave and fly 20 feet in the air.

Visiting the sea turtle hospital was a highlight. Knowing that there are people dedicated to these amazing creatures and nursing them back to health in part because they know it was others of our species that messed the turtles up in the first place. They didn’t allow photos, but luckily the sand castle experts built one!

A few Gunn family traditions came into play, such as hunting for shark’s teeth. Becky said the tooth that Shirley found (at left) was the largest she’d seen in years.

We didn’t have our camera on hand when we went to the pirate-themed mini-golf course (another Gunn family tradition). It was hilarious watching Levi placing the ball on the green where he saw fit, “sweeping” it into the hole and then shouting, “I did it!!” and clapping for himself. Jim Gunn would have been proud.
