2003

August 2003: It has been a busy month! Of course, the most exciting thing has been my first birthday, but I also went on a trip with Dad to Jefferson City, MO; had friends come visit us from Appleton, WI; had my first year checkup; had more studio photos taken; and have finally learned to crawl! It's all here on the page below! August 9, 2003.

August 1-2, 2003: Dad and I took a trip to Jefferson City, Missouri to visit our friends Jeremy and Shelly, who just moved there a few weeks ago. It was my first night away from Mom and that was hard, but I loved playing with their dog and seeing their new house. No, one of them is not the new governor - we just posed in front of the Capitol building; I didn't say they lived there.

August 7, 2003: In honor of my upcoming birthday, we had a new set of professional photos taken at Sears Portrait Studio. Click on the button below to see all of the professional photos.

August 15, 2003. August 7, 2003: I full-fledge crawled for the first time today. I've been doing that commando crawl thing some, but now I've got the full hang of crawling. It's taken me awhile and I could now be walking anyday, but I can still say I learned to crawl and didn't skip it.

On another note entirely, this was my due date one year ago!

August 9, 2003: I turned one today! We had a great party with lots of friends and decorations and water play in the backyard. Of course, I loved getting to eat birthday cake for the first time, even if Dad had to literally hose me off afterwards.

August 12, 2003. August 12, 2003: I have discovered that when I'm in my walker I can get into the drawer with the towels and bibs. Wow is that fun to pull them out and throw them all over the floor! By the end of the month, I even got the hang of putting things back!

August 14, 2003: I also like playing the drums. Mom and Dad have set aside a shelf in the kitchen with all the tupperware and pots and pans that it is okay for me to get into. They give me a couple spoons and let me bang away on the different bowls.

August 13, 2003: I had my one-year checkup today. Doc says I'm healthy, weight 21 pounds and 14 ounces (Mom had guessed 22 pounds and Dad guessed 22 pounds 4 ounces) and am 30 1/2 inches long.

August 14, 2003. August 14-18, 2003: Char and Sawyer Bricco came to visit us from Appleton, Wisconsin. Mom knew Char when they both lived in Appleton and again when Char lived in Kansas City for awhile. Char's son Sawyer is only two months older than me. We had lots of fun playing together! August 14, 2003.

August 20, 2003: Mom's cousin sent in this picture of me to www.babygolf.com and I won this Cutest Baby Contest. Of course, Dad has never played golf and doesn't plan to, and the prize for the contest is golf-themed baby clothes, but, hey - they're free!

August Milestones:

Blowing Bubbles: In the third week of August, I started putting my face in the water during bath time and blowing bubbles. I'd been putting my face near the water and lapping up a little bit (don't you all drink your bath water?).

Signing for Giraffe: I also toward the end of the month to make up my own sign language. Mom and Dad have taught me lots of words, but they don't always teach me the words I want to know. Since my room has lots of giraffes in it, I figured I should have a sign for that. I decided to point to a giraffe and wave my arm up and down. Oh sure, you won't find it in any American Sign Language books, but it's in the guide to Evan Speak.

Rain, Rain, DON'T Go Away: It also rained in the last week of the month for the first time in quite a while. Dad let me watch out the window for a while and then we went and got our swimsuits on and went outside to play in it. I splashed in the puddles for a long time and was especially fascinated with where the water came out of the down spout. Afterward, I took a nice warm bath.

Consequently, the next day, I was ready to go again. I explained to Dad that I wanted to go out in the rain again by signing for water, rain, and bath. He didn't oblige me, though. For some reason, he seemed to think that since it wasn't actually raining, it would make it difficult for me to play in the rain. Silly Daddy.
