2005

Hello, all! Well, everything about this month pales in comparison to the events of the last day of the month – the birth of my new baby brother Levi! For all you younger siblings out there, you should appreciate that Dad is going to make every attempt to keep up a separate Website for Levi (you can check it out at LeviWhitaker.com) while still maintaining mine. We’ll see what happens – don’t be surprised our Websites our updated even more infrequently than they are now!
The wonderful events of May 31 were foreshadowed by the baby birds born on our neighbor’s basketball goal. It was pretty exciting to keep checking up on the nest until the two baby robins were born. Then I got to watch as the mom would fly off and get the babies food and bring it back and plop it in their eagerly waiting open mouths.

About a week before Levi’s due date, he sent out a false alarm sending Mom and Dad into a frenzy. Aunt Jennifer (pictured at left) and Mom’s friend Susan both drove down, from Minnesota and Wisconsin respectively. Unfortunately, Levi decided he wasn’t ready to come yet and Jennifer and Susan didn’t get to be here for his birth.

By the time that week came to a close, though, Mom’s friend Jodie (pictured at right) came to visit from Rhode Island. She did get to be here for Levi’s birth – just like she was for me.

Once Levi was born, I got a special big brother present – a Thomas the train set! I’ve liked trains for awhile now – as you can see from the picture at right where I’m making my own train with the kitchen chairs.

You may have noticed in the train picture above that I have Kanga, from the Winnie the Pooh stories, as my passenger. Years ago, Dad’s grandma made that Kanga, as well as many of the other Pooh characters, for Dad and Uncle Mark. When Uncle Mark was born, Dad greeted him home from the hospital by putting his stuffed animals out on the porch. At Uncle Mark’s suggestion, we thought it would be a good idea to reenact that scene again.

The Big Day – May 31. When Levi did actually come, Mom and Dad had it all worked out as to who would stay with me while they went to the hospital. I was prepared to help out with the delivery, but they thought otherwise.

When the time came, Mom and Dad and Jodie left for the hospital about 10am. I played at the neighbor’s house, Steve and Mary, with their grandson who is about 18 months old. Roughly an hour later, Uncle Mark and Grandpa arrived to stay with me. Meanwhile, Grandma headed for the hospital to be there when Levi was born.

Mark and Grandpa were prepared to stay for the long haul. After we played a bit, they fed me lunch and put me down for nap. Meanwhile, Levi decided not to waste any time coming into the world and by the time my nap was over, he was born! Mark and Grandpa then brought me to the hospital to meet my new baby brother.
Any of you who’ve had babies recently know that hospitals are pretty good with security systems these days. Mom and Dad and the baby have to wear matching bracelets to make sure no one else leaves with the baby. Mom and Levi even wore what you might call an “anti-theft” device that would even lock down the maternity ward when Levi was close to the doors.

I thought the bracelets looked fun and we asked the nurse if I could have one too. She made up a special bracelet just for me to wear along with my “I’m a big brother” stickers.

See ya next month!
