June 6: Denver to Westcliffe, CO

| Garden of the Gods: After a couple days in Denver, it is time to move on. Our trek leads us through Colorado Springs, where we stop for about an hour at the Garden of the Gods. These are huge rock climbing formations which I’ve seen 30 years earlier on a church youth group trip. In fact, our family poses in a rock crevice that I’m pretty certain our youth group posed in. I also remember our crew going horseback riding oh-so-many years ago and Anita being thrown from her horse and having to go to the ER to make sure she doesn’t have a concussion. The Whitaker/Gunn vacation doesn’t involve any such drama, although we do fumble awkwardly along the poorly marked trails longer than we planned as we try to find our way back to the parking lot. |

There will be no concussions on this trip, although we do have to coax Evan and Levi out of climbing too high on the rocks.

| The Chandlers: Our next stop is Westcliffe, CO, to see former neighbors Mary and Steve. They have 30+ acres at the foot of the mountains.
Evan is mostly eager to get reacquainted with their two poodles, Doc and Lucy, even bringing along a stuffed animal he named after the latter.

| The kids are pretty stoked to go for a ride in Steve’s tractor but may be even more excited about where we’ll spend the night – the Chandlers’ RV, the very RV that often sat in front of their house as they prepped for trips or were unloading after returning. Evan and Levi even had occasions to explore the RV as it sat parked in front of the neighbors and they graciously gave Evan and Levi tours.
