Music Makers Encyclopedia

Dave’s Music Database Music Makers Encyclopedia contains entries for hundreds of the best music makers of all time. The term “music makers” is used to refer to individual performers, groups, and duos as well as “non-performers” such as writers, producers, and others in the music industry. Click on a letter below to choose a recording act (“S” for Bruce Springsteen, “B” for Beatles, etc.). Scroll down for more details regarding information (including bios, birthdays, awards, and noted recordings) which may be contained in a music maker encyclopedia entry.

Shown with the act are its major awards (see more here), short bios for select acts (generally taken or adapted from Joel Whitburn’s Pop Memories 1890-1954 and Top Pop Singles: Billboard books), and links to all albums reviewed here at the DMDB.

Bios:

Short bios accompany some groups and individuals. Group bios generally detail the years the group was active – which may just cover years the group has charted; it can be difficult to track groups who have fallen off the radar because they either no longer have charting material or simply work now as a touring act. Also included are known members of the group – again, it can be difficult to track all members of long-running groups who may not be in the limelight. Finally, a brief description or history of the band is included. This may be as simple as an indication of what genre the group is considered and where they started.

For individuals, birth and death dates are included alongside birth names and towns. Additionally, individuals may have a bio similar in format to those for acts.

Note: information for those bios is most frequently taken from Joel Whitburn’s Top Pop Singles (12th edition) and Pop Memories 1890-1954. Click here for more bibliographic detail on these books as well as other Record Research books by Joel Whitburn which compile Billboard magazine chart information.
